Captivating Custom Wine Cellar Design for a Lovely Home in California
Regrets and disappointments await homeowners who do not choose a reliable builder for their wine cellar installation project. Wine is a perishable product.
Therefore, storing it in the right conditions is crucial, or else, it will spoil and go to waste. Imagine walking into your room and discovering that your prized wines are ruined due to poor conditions.
We recommend having a climate-controlled wine room for your collection.
In addition to the proper preservation of wines, another important reason many homeowners invest their time and money in building a refrigerated wine cellar is to have a gorgeous wine storage and display area.

Smart Homeowners chose to Work with a Reliable Modern Wine Cellar Builder in California
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars is one of the most trusted builders in California and one of our partners in wine room construction. Recently, they were contacted by clients who wished to convert their space into a functional wine cellar.
The home is 40,000 square feet. Since they have a growing wine collection, they decided to invest in a wine room equipped with a wine refrigeration system.
After making a careful assessment of the client’s needs, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars created 3-dimensional drawings. The CAD images provided better visualization of the completed wine cellar and allowed the homeowners to make changes in the design.
The drawings included various elevations of the walls, racking styles and dimensions, and bottle capacities. After the owners approved the drawings, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars began the installation process.
Room and Door Insulation: a Crucial Step in Wine Cellar Construction
A well-insulated wine cellar will prevent the warm air from entering and the cool air from escaping.
A knowledgeable builder understands the importance of sealing the wine room to achieve a stable environment essential for proper wine aging.
Before installing the wine racks, wine cooling system, and door, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars insulated the walls and ceiling.
To determine the correct R-value for the room performed a heat load calculation. One factor that affects the R-value is the amount of glass to be used in the wine cellar.
The higher the R-value, the better the insulating properties. They also insulated the wine cellar door by adding weather stripping and an automatic door bottom.
Custom Wine Cellar Design that Spruced Up a Boring Space in a California Home Using Metal Wine Racks
The original plan of the homeowners was to utilize wooden wine racks. Later on, they changed their mind and chose a modern wine storage system when Coastal Custom Wine Cellars introduced the VintageView metal wine racks.
VintageView has been providing elegant and affordable wine storage solutions for collectors, designers, and builders who thirst for modern design.
Their metal wine racks are designed to add character to residential and commercial wine cellars. Size, stains, finishes, and depths can be customized to fit your specific needs.
Finish options include Polished Chrome, Black Chrome (Black Pearl Finish), Satin Black, and Brushed Nickel. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars will help you determine the best finish for your metal wine racks.
Sophisticated Features of the Wine Racks
The style of wine racks has a significant impact on the overall appeal of your wine room. It should be based on the owner’s aesthetic and functional preferences.
For this particular project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars installed floor-to-ceiling metal wine racks. This type of wine storage system from VintageView was the best option for a room that measures 10 ft. wide and 20 ft. long.
These wine racks are designed to maximize space and for installations in tiny and irregular-shaped rooms. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars used wine racks with lengths up to 4 feet, and depth for single, double, and triple storage.
They did not install the wine racks directly on the walls because they wanted to preserve the gorgeous finish. What they did was to include frames in the wine racks.
The wine racks are in a label forward configuration, which is a good feature because it stores the bottles with the labels facing out.
This means that the wine description is visible, so there is no need to flip the bottle to know its type, variety, alcohol content, etc.
Despite space constraints, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars was able to create a wine rack system that could hold approximately 1,400 bottles.
There are 68 wine rack openings for magnum bottles, and the rest were intended for accommodating 750ml bottles.
Dramatic Lighting for a Tastefully Designed Custom Wine Cellar in California
How you illuminate your wine storage and display area plays a significant role in enhancing the beauty of your wine room. When choosing a wine cellar lighting system, it is best to consult a specialist like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars to create a striking effect.
For this particular project, they installed backlighting to illuminate the wall behind the wine racks with a dramatic flair. They added a switch to allow ease of control to the lighting.
Achieving the Best Storage Conditions with an Efficient Wine Cellar Cooling System
An effective and efficient wine refrigeration system also helps in achieving the optimum conditions essential to preserve the desirable characteristics of the wine. These factors must be considered when choosing the most suitable climate-control equipment:
- Size and location of the wine cellar
- Number of bottles intended to be stored in the room
- Amount of glass to be installed in the cellar
Budget of the client - Overall appeal that the client wants
For this particular project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars utilized a ducted self-contained wine cooling unit. This was the best option because the client did not want any visible equipment in their wine room, and no space in the racking was occupied.
They created the supply and return vents on one of the walls and covered them with decorative grills.
