Awe-Inspiring Transformation of a Basement into a Home Wine Cellar Built by San Diego Experts
There is no safer place for your wines than in a climate-controlled wine cellar. Before starting your wine cellar project, you must remember that consulting with an expert builder is a smart idea. Wine cellar experts can build wine rooms according to the size and location of your space, aesthetic preference, number of wines you plan to store, and budget.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars is one of our partners in wine cellar construction. They are highly experienced wine cellar contractors who have completed wine cellar renovation projects with the goal of exceeding each client’s expectations. They will design a wine room where your favorite vintages can age until they are ready for consumption. They will also make sure that your wine display area can be a conversation starter.
A homeowner in California had a large renovation project in her basement. Part of the renovation was building a custom wine cellar in one of the corners of the room. She wanted to hire a company that had extensive experience in designing and installing wine rooms for wine collectors who are on a tight budget. They sought the help of Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, one of the premier builders in San Diego.
Planning the Project: Creating a Custom Wine Cellar Design for a Homeowner in San Diego
A well-planned build-out project will prevent regrets in the future. At Custom Wine Cellar San Diego and Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, creating 3D renderings before starting the wine cellar installation is a standard procedure in every project that we do.
When you work with us, we will provide 3-dimensional drawings to help you have a better visualization of your completed wine cellar. Another advantage of creating a 3D design is that it allows the owner to make revisions. This process is crucial in making sure that every element of the wine room meets the client’s functional and aesthetic preferences.
The CAD images include the various plan views, dimensions of the room and wine racks, bottle orientations, and bottle capacities. For this particular project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars came up with a wine rack system that could accommodate more than 1,000 bottles after the client approved the drawings.
Preparing the Wine Cellar
Another process that has a significant role in proper wine storage is creating an airtight seal. Wine needs a stable environment to preserve its desirable characteristics. When the wine room is not insulated correctly, the optimum conditions will not be achieved, resulting in wine spoilage.
To protect our client’s wine collection from wine faults, we insulated the wine room. Without correct insulation, there will be air leakage and extreme changes in the storage condition. The cold air will escape, and the warm air will enter the wine room, which can pose a danger to the wines, the refrigeration system, the walls, and the ceiling.
When the air leaks to and from the cellar, there will be temperature fluctuations and varying humidity levels. When this happens, condensation will form in the room, causing mold and mildew growth on the wine labels, cork, and wine racks, which may affect the wine’s taste and aroma. Moreover, mold can also thrive in the wall cavities and ceiling, damaging the structural integrity of your wine cellar.
Racking Features Incorporated into the Custom Wine Cellar Design for a San Diego Home
On this particular project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars completed the wine rack installation after two months. Since they had to stay within the client’s budget, they decided to combine semi-custom and custom wine racks.
Semi-Custom Wine Racks
Semi-custom or kit wine racks are ready-made wine racks available in different sizes and styles. They are less expensive than custom wine racks. For this wine cellar project in San Diego, we incorporated individual wine rack kits and a display row on the left, right, and back walls.
The display row allows the owner to highlight some of his favorite vintages, which pitches the bottles at a 15-degree angle. This bottle orientation keeps the cork moist, which prevents the cork from shrinking and losing its elasticity. When the cork dries out, it will decrease in size, allowing an unwanted amount of air to enter the bottle and mix with the wine. This occurrence will result in wine oxidation and spoil the wine.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars also used true radius curved wine racks to create a smooth transition from one wall to another and add a custom look to the racking installed in this home wine cellar in San Diego.
Custom Wine Rack: the Focal Point in this Home Wine Cellar in San Diego
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars added a custom component to the design, which was the solid tabletop installed on the back wall. The client personally chose it. The tabletop provides space for decanting and serving wine. It can also be a good place for taking down notes. Since it was constructed from Redwood, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars had to apply a clear lacquer to make it resistant to stain.
Above the tabletop is a stemware rack where the wine glasses can be displayed upside down. The bottom section consists of diamond bins, which are ideal for bulk storage and are known to provide good airflow around the bottles. To keep the cost down, we utilized lattice-style diamond bins instead of solid pieces of wood in each bin.
Elegant Wine Cellar Door
With so many door styles available, it is best to consult an expert builder to ensure that the correct door is installed in your wine cellar. Your door plays an essential role in the overall appeal of your wine room. Moreover, it can also affect the storage conditions in the cellar.
For this project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars chose the pre-fit Barolo style wine cellar door. The center panel is a dual-pane glass. Using thermally insulated glass will help prevent air leakage in the cellar. They also equipped the door with weather stripping and an automatic bottom sweep.
