What Makes This Modern Wine Room in Ashley Falls-Carmel Canyon Unique?
Custom Wine Cellars San Diego has been in the cellar-making industry for years. From traditional cellars to stylishly modern ones, we know how to create specialized cellars and fit them wherever you want them to be on your property.

For this project, the client wanted a contemporary or modern wine room to be seen from their Ashley Falls-Carmel Canyon living room area.
With the predominantly white theme of the room, they wanted the cellar to serve both as a wine storage unit and as the room’s highlighted centerpiece.
Hence, an exceptional design was a must. Continue to read along as we dissect the elements that make this contemporary living room wine cellar an immersive piece of art.
Defining Contemporary Design for San Diego Wine Cellars
Wine cellars have long ascended from being gloomy, subterranean wine storage rooms. As time passed, modern and above-ground cellars have slowly captured homeowners and builders alike, proving that wine cellar designs can be adaptive. Every custom wine cellar has its own style, making them a three-dimensional piece of art that everyone can appreciate.
When we talk about “contemporary,” we always assume the present. In the design world, though, the contemporary style combines both present and past trends. Because of this, contemporary designs are continually evolving. In wine cellars, various design elements are integrated through techniques that ultimately create a balanced finish.
For this modern living room wine cellar in San Diego, wood, metal, and glass were the main materials. Since wood gives a room texture, touches of metal were used to help smoothen out the feel. Likewise, glass panels were used to make the wine cellar door.
Wood for a Classic and Rustic Vibe
Earthy tones and materials give a uniquely-homey feeling. Building on this idea, wood, and neutral colors were used to create warmth and contrast. Unfinished mahogany (for the wooden wine racks), wooden diamond bins, storage cases, and a solid arch were some elements used to add to the natural aesthetic.
All the species of wood we utilize in every project are specially selected. This is because not all species can withstand the temperature and humidity/moisture levels inside a wine cellar environment.
The wrong kind of wood may produce some toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which may affect your wine (and perhaps people going in and out of it in the long run). So apart from the modern wine cellar’s design and function, we ensure that the environment inside is safe for all your wines.

A custom wine cellar isn’t complete without some personal touches by the owner. For this project, our clients opted to have the wood stained to give the space more personality. Lastly, no contemporary wine cellar design for any San Diego living room is complete without the proper lighting. So, we positioned LED ribbon lights discreetly throughout the wooden and metal peg wine racks, giving more elegance to the collection.

Traditional Meets Modern: How It Came Together
Wood elements represented the traditional design. To complete the contemporary look, modern features were added alongside the wooden wine racks, including touches of metal and glass.
The enclosure was made of glass which was a very strategic design choice. It not only allowed people to see the wine cellar without physically going in, but it also allowed it to connect with the living room — considering that the flooring used was similar to that found in the living room.
More Than a Great-Looking, Modern Wine Rooms in San Diego
Building a wine cellar requires both design and engineering skills. Preserving wine is, first and foremost, the purpose of building a wine cellar anyway. So, apart from putting together an exquisite interior, we always put our best foot forward to bring in only the most reliable materials and systems for your wine cellar to fully serve its function.
For this modern San Diego living room wine cellar, the team brought in the WhisperKOOL ductless split cooling system to keep the entire room cool. This kind of refrigeration system allows us to mount the evaporator on the ceiling to distribute air more efficiently throughout the room. The evaporator was also placed behind a vent so it wouldn’t disrupt the aesthetics of the room. Because it is a split-type system, the compressor was placed outside the house, so it didn’t take up space.
