Materials for Our Rustic Wood Wine Rack
Rustic wood wine racks leave a classic impression since they are a fixed feature in traditional wine cellars. Whether we are in a hometown vineyard or a five-star winery in Carmel Valley, rustic wood wine racks are a great traditional detail to a home wine cellar.
In planning out your rustic wood wine rack, there are multiple wooden materials to choose from. The more popular choices for San Diego rustic wood wine racks are Pine, Maple, Walnut, Redwood, Oak, Cedar, Mahogany, and Alder. These woods have different finishes, sturdiness, and reactions to stains. So when picking the perfect material, these differences in wood are factors you should consider. At Custom Wine Cellars San Diego, we can help you choose the right kind of wood. We can also professionally design and build your San Diego rustic wooden wine rack.
Considering the Area For our Rustic Wood Wine Rack
After knowing all the kinds of wood we can work with, we look into the space on which we are building our rustic wooden wine racks. Having all the details we need regarding the space is important in ensuring the wood perfectly mold into the space. It is also necessary to see the space and its layout to maximize the storage properly.
In this specific project, we were working with an ordinary corner room. However, the clients had an extraordinary idea: to have a curve design for the floor-to-ceiling rustic wooden wine racks. In particular, they wanted a U-shape for the wine cellar. This was a good idea because having a U-shaped cellar meant the rustic wooden wine racks would engulf the space with warmth and welcome. These curved edges made the space more unique and showcased the bottles more invitingly. It made the space less intimidating and more intimate.
Designing a Rustic Wood Wine Rack in a U-Shaped Wine Room
For your rustic wood wine rack design, the type of wood should fit with your visualized aesthetic and perform well in your area’s specific conditions. If your wine rack holds hundreds of magnum bottles of 1.5L each, you should look into a sturdier wood material such as Redwood. If you prefer a neat and pristine look on your San Diego wooden wine racks, you might steer clear of Oak or Cedar. When starting on the design of your cellar, we choose our words wisely.
For this project, we opted for Alderwood. The most important factor that led us to select this wood was the unique shape we designed for the rustic wood wine racks. Since we need the wood to create these curved sides, we looked into a more lightweight and soft hardwood. In this case, Alder was the perfect choice because it was a sturdy wood that could carry heavy bottles of red but was still versatile enough to be bent in the U-shaped design. Alderwood also stains really well, and that was something the clients looked forward to.
Now onto the storage. There are numerous ways to position your wine to show its best features. You can display it cork-forward or horizontally, label-forward, and more. In designing this project, we decided on multiple wine display positions.
Firstly, we designed the rustic wooden racks to be symmetrical. To optimize the storage space, we had vertical shelves built with Acrylic L.E.D boards to spotlight the bottles. Near the glass panel area, we put in two rows of high-reveal racks. At the bottom, we designed cubbies. While for bigger bottles, we incorporated triple-deep horizontal racks.
Making Sure Your Bottles and Racks Last A Long Time
In this project, the area for the cellar had a wall that was directly exposed to the exterior. To ensure the wines could age properly, our team installed a cooling and insulation system that could regulate the cellar’s temperature. We also installed glass doors to help make the cooling more efficient and energy-saving. Taking these measures to age the wine and preserve the racks correctly is important in maintaining your home wine cellar.
