Creation of Transitional Home Wine Cellar by San Diego Experts
You don’t have to utilize a basement or a large room for your wine cellar. A designer who has extensive experience and proper training can help transform any space in your home into an elegant modern wine room.
On a recent project, we partnered with Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, one of the top–notch builders in San Diego, in turning an old office space into a transitional home wine cellar.
Wine Cellar Construction Challenges
In San Diego, California, home wine cellars have been increasing in popularity. Recently, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, one of our dealers in wine room construction, completed a residential project with pride.
The original room was an office enclosed by three walls. Each wall had distinctive characteristics, which posed a challenge to our master builders in San Diego.
There were two large windows on the left wall, which led into the backyard. These windows allowed the area to receive natural sunlight. The right wall was bare and shared with the garage. The back wall faces the stairs and kitchen. It was used as a doorless entry to the office.
We made a careful assessment of the client’s needs and the room’s requirements. This process helped them determine the ideal design and components for the lovely custom home wine cellar.
Working with the Windows: Minimizing Sunlight Exposure and Using Insulated Glass Panels
Heat and light from the sun are detrimental to wine. These external factors can alter the wine’s chemical properties, resulting in off-flavors and unpleasant aromas.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars wanted to retain the architectural appearance of the home’s exterior. They did not remove the windows that led into the backyard. They did nothing to the windows on the exterior wall.
However, they used stacked stones to cover the entire left wall inside the wine cellar to create an attractive backdrop to the racking. The stone design continues above the other two walls, with space for the racking below them. Covering the wall with stones accents the room and creates a smooth transition from metal to wooden wine racks.
Turning the Odd-Shaped Opening into a Contemporary Glass Door
The north wall had a Tetris shape and a rectangular opening that served as the entryway to the old office. We removed a part of the wall to widen the wine cellar door. The homeowner wanted a seamless glass wine cellar door with fixed side panels. The frameless glass door makes the space look bigger.
A poorly insulated glass door will cause condensation to form in the wine cellar. When this happens, mold will grow, which can affect the structural integrity of the walls and ceiling. Mold can also grow on the wine labels and storage racks. Hence, we used ½ inch tempered glass panels for better insulation.
Impressive Wine Rack Design for a Small Room
Nowadays, combining traditional and modern elements in the design is a hot trend. It is known as the transitional style. In this project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars used glass for the door. For the wine racks, they utilized wood and metal. Putting these materials together created an eye-catching transitional design.
To make both the wood and metal stand out in this home wine cellar in San Diego, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars carefully selected the stains and finishes for the wine racks. They also made sure that the wine racks are in the correct placement to show off warmth and sleekness.
Choosing the Right Type of Wood for the Wine Racks
We wanted the wooden wine racks to blend with the home’s living area and kitchen. This was the main reason they chose Malaysian
Mahogany. Additionally, this type of wood looks more attractive when applied with the right stain and finish.
They stained the wood with a Sherwin Williams formula (Early American Stain) and applied it with an eggshell lacquer finish for a lustrous look. The wine racks look like they were manufactured from the same material that was used for the kitchen cabinetry and furniture in the living area.
Bottle Orientations
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars combined various racking styles to accommodate different sizes of bottles in the client’s collection, achieve maximum capacity, and add character to the wine room.
The right wall consists of column wine racks at the top section. A display row in the middle section allows the owner to highlight some of his bottles. Below that, our San Diego wine cellar experts incorporated diamond and horizontal storage bins. They added a quarter-round display rack at the front end of the right wall. It provides a place for displaying the owner’s decanters and decorations.
At the back wall, our wine cellar contractors installed a tabletop with cabinets and drawers for storing wine cellar accessories. Above the tabletop are adjustable glass shelves made of 3/8 inch tempered glass. The shelves provide additional storage space. They included a stemware rack for storing the wine glasses upside down.
Installing a Metal Racking System from a Trusted Manufacturer
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars used metal wine racks by VintageView. They decided to place the contemporary racking on the wall that was covered with stones.
The floor-to-ceiling metal wine racks hold the bottles at a label-forward orientation. With the wine labels facing out, it will be easier for the owner to find a specific bottle of wine. He does not have to flip the bottle to see the wine’s description.
Our team chose double-deep storage racks to maximize the space. To complement the elegance of Mahogany and make the metal wine racks stand out against the stone wall, we applied a black satin finish on the metal racks.
Ideal Choice of Climate-Control System for a Transitional Home Wine Cellar in San Diego
Instead of creating ducting through the home to allow heat from the cooling unit to dissipate to an open area, our experts installed the self-contained 4200 model by CellarPro Wine Refrigeration Units. This type of cooling unit was the right choice because it minimized the amount of ducting required to redirect the exhaust.
It reduced the possibility of increasing the ambient temperature inside the garage. A 6-inch diameter flex duct and a rear duct adaptor were used to redirect the hot air exhaust.
